Environmental Policy at Crann Óg
Click here to download a more detailed version of our Environmental Policy.
Crannog is built mainly from wood, and a lot of recycled materials, by a creative couple of ecologically-minded people, Flor and Marion. Harmony with the elements is sought in all projects.
Ambience
The natural ambience here is mainly quiet, and we enjoy this with our guests, so please don't use any amplified music sources on the campsite.
Clean Air
We are blessed in this area to have very clean air, as is evident by the abundance of lichen on the rocks and trees. So please don't leave your car running idle or burn too much firewood. Fill your lungs and enjoy a walk, making minimal impact by staying on the paths, bringing back what you brought in and leaving behind what you find there.
Water Conservation
While our drinking water comes from a bored well, rain water is also collected in barrels, tanks and even a pond, for garden plants and animals.
Waste Management
Our dry compost toilets separate the urine from the solids, enhancing composting. Sewage and waste water is minimised by proper management: septic tanks work well biologically when you separate the grey water and don't add chemical products to the mix. Our willow beds and reed beds deal with the grey water.
Awareness
All staff are aware of our environmental policy and how to minimise water and energy consumption, and the value of teaching curious guests and visitors about composting and recycling.
Leave No Trace
All persons, both staff and visitors are to follow the "Leave No Trace" code of conduct, with guidelines found at Leave No Trace Ireland
The Leave No Trace program is designed to help outdoor enthusiasts value the natural environment, to understand the impact of their activities, and to enable them to make decisions to minimize that impact while still enjoying their activities with freedom.
◦ This includes the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Be Considerate of Others
- Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
- Travel and Camp on Durable Ground
- Leave What You Find
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Minimise the Effects of Fire
